Graham Hardie Poetry

Matoka

You are the starlet, the efficacy of my spiritual life
And I hold onto you in the darkest of places.
You are the picture of my virtue, an example for
The rudiments of my mentality and the values
Of my heart; I speak to you through the ages,
Through the long grass where you played, through
The trees from where you saw the ships arrive,
Through the echoes of your language and through
Your love for the man who brought you peace;
When I sleep I feel the sinews of your loss,
And pray for the life you have been given to
Be immersed in the waves of the holiest of waters.
